Subodh Gupta, often called the ‘Damien Hirst of Delhi,’ is a leading Indian contemporary artist known for his diverse work across mediums like sculpture, painting, installation, photography, video, and performance. Born in Bihar in 1964, Gupta’s artistic journey began with theater and newspaper design before he moved to New Delhi after earning a BFA in painting from the College of Art in Patna. He gained prominence for using everyday Indian objects, particularly stainless steel kitchen utensils, to create intricate artworks that reflect on the cultural and economic transformations in India. His work explores the tensions between tradition and globalization, wealth and poverty, and caste politics and religious beliefs, challenging societal ambivalence while transcending disciplinary boundaries and market-driven constraints.
